Preview
The Tampa Bay Rays head to Arlington for a Friday night clash against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field, with first pitch set for 8:05 PM ET. Nick Martinez gets the ball for Tampa Bay opposite Rangers right-hander Trevor Williams. With the regular season in its final stretch, every game carries weight, and the Rays will need a strong road performance against a Rangers lineup that can do serious damage top to bottom. Catch the action on Rays.TV or locally on WDAE 95.7 FM.
Starting Pitchers: Nick Martinez vs. Trevor Williams
Nick Martinez draws the assignment for Tampa Bay in this road opener. Martinez has been a reliable arm for the Rays this season, and the Rays will lean on him to eat innings and keep a potent Texas offense in check in what figures to be a warm September night in Texas. He'll need to be sharp from the jump.
Williams gets the nod for the Rangers. A veteran who can mix his pitches effectively, Williams presents a genuine challenge for any visiting lineup. The Rays will need to be patient at the plate and work counts if they want to generate traffic against him.
Texas Rangers Lineup to Watch
The Rangers are rolling out a lineup that demands respect on every page of the lineup card. Corey Seager hits second at shortstop and is the kind of left-handed bat who can change a game with one swing. Wyatt Langford slots in third, and fourth-place hitter Brandon Nimmo in right field gives Texas a deep, balanced attack. Joc Pederson leads off as the DH, and Evan Carter — a name familiar to anyone who has watched the Rangers develop their young talent — hits seventh in center field.
The bottom third of the order is no automatic out either. Jake Burger at first base and Cody Freeman at third round out a lineup that has legitimate power from top to bottom. Elias Díaz catches and hits ninth. Martinez cannot afford to lose focus at any point in this batting order.
Keys to the Game for Tampa Bay
- Martinez's command: If he locates his pitches and avoids the big inning, the Rays stay in this game. A crooked number early against a lineup this deep is hard to recover from on the road.
- Patient at-bats against Williams: Tampa Bay needs to grind at-bats, work Williams deep into counts, and force the Rangers bullpen into action earlier rather than later.
- Contain the middle of the Texas order: Seager, Langford, and Nimmo are the engine of this lineup. Keeping them off the bases — or at minimum, stranding them — is the single biggest factor in whether the Rays can steal a win in Arlington.
- Capitalize on early opportunities: Road wins in September don't come easy. If Tampa Bay gets runners on against Williams in the early innings, they cannot leave them stranded. Situational hitting will be critical.
Prediction
This is a tough environment for a road team. Globe Life Field plays differently than Tropicana Field — it's a bigger stage with a live crowd that can energize a Rangers lineup that already doesn't need much help getting motivated. That said, the Rays have the pitching matchup to stay competitive. Martinez versus Williams projects as a tight, low-scoring game. Expect the Rays to be in this one deep into the seventh inning. Call it Rangers 4, Rays 3 — but don't count Tampa Bay out until the final out is recorded.
