Preview
The Tampa Bay Rays wrap up their road trip with a Sunday afternoon matchup at Citizens Bank Park, taking on the Philadelphia Phillies on September 27, 2026, at 3:05 PM ET. Nick Martinez starts for Tampa Bay against one of the National League's most formidable arms in Zack Wheeler. With the regular season deep into its final days, every game carries genuine weight for both clubs. Rays fans can catch the action on Rays.TV or listen along on WDAE 95.7 FM, while Spanish-language coverage is available on WQBN/1300AM and 106.1 Rumba.
Pitching Matchup: Nick Martinez vs. Zack Wheeler
This is a tough draw for Tampa Bay. Zack Wheeler is one of the more daunting right-handers in the National League, a power pitcher who works deep into games and can neutralize lineups top to bottom. The Rays will need to be disciplined, work counts, and find gaps rather than trying to overpower him.
Nick Martinez gets the ball for the Rays. He'll need to match Wheeler's intensity as best he can and keep the Phillies' potent lineup in check. Philadelphia's order — anchored by Bryce Harper hitting third and Kyle Schwarber batting second — doesn't offer many soft spots. Martinez's ability to command his arsenal and limit big innings will be the central factor in Tampa Bay's chances.

Keys to Watch for the Rays
- Junior Caminero at the heart of the order: Batting third, Caminero is Tampa Bay's most dangerous run-producing threat. If he can get on base and do damage against Wheeler, the Rays' offense has a real shot at manufacturing runs.
- Martinez's early efficiency: Citizens Bank Park can be an unforgiving environment. Martinez needs to avoid putting runners on early against a lineup that includes Harper, Schwarber, and Turner. Falling behind in counts against those hitters is a recipe for a quick exit.
- Mullins and Mesa Jr. setting the table: Cedric Mullins and Victor Mesa Jr. need to be factors from the top and bottom of the order respectively. Speed on the bases and pressure on Wheeler's rhythm could help the Rays punch above their weight offensively.
- Bullpen management: If Martinez can give the Rays five solid innings, the Tampa Bay bullpen becomes the bridge to keep this game competitive deep into the afternoon.
Prediction
Zack Wheeler is a difficult assignment for any team, and the Rays are walking into an atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park that won't be quiet. Philadelphia's lineup is deep and experienced, and the home-field advantage is real. That said, Tampa Bay has the lineup construction to steal a run or two if Caminero and Aranda come through in key spots.
The Rays will need a strong outing from Martinez just to keep this game close. If he delivers five or six innings of quality work, this has the makings of a competitive, low-scoring game. If not, the Phillies' firepower will make it a long afternoon. Expect a tough-fought loss, but don't count the Rays out — they've stolen games in tougher spots than this.
Prediction: Phillies 4, Rays 2
